Browse times:

In January 2017, the National Health and Family Planning Commission approved the establishment of the National Center for Children’s Health, designating Beijing Children’s Hospital, Capital Medical University as the principal institution for the center in Beijing. Together with the Shanghai-based joint institutions — Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and Shanghai Children’s Medical Center — it forms the National Center for Children’s Health. The designation marked a significant milestone in the hospital’s development and opened a new chapter in advancing pediatric medicine and safeguarding children’s health nationwide.

The establishment of the center aims to strengthen China’s pediatric health-care system, enhance the diagnosis and treatment capacity for complex and critical pediatric conditions, reduce regional disparities in medical resources, and promote balanced development nationwide.

As the National Center for Children’s Health (Beijing), the hospital was entrusted with responsibilities including:

  · Serving as a national hub for the diagnosis and treatment of complex and severe pediatric diseases

  · Advancing high-level pediatric clinical research and translational medicine

  · Leading national disease registries, epidemiological research, and public health monitoring related to major childhood conditions

  · Supporting workforce development and capacity building in pediatrics across China

  · Promoting coordinated regional development through pediatric medical alliances and cross-regional collaboration

The center operates under a co-construction model between the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the Beijing Municipal Government, with Beijing Children’s Hospital responsible for daily operations and implementation.

Since its designation, the National Center for Children’s Health (Beijing) has continued to strengthen national pediatric networks, promote tiered diagnosis and treatment, expand cross-regional collaboration, and contribute to improving health outcomes for children across China.

This milestone laid an important institutional foundation for advancing children’s health and supporting the national strategy of building a Healthy China.
