The National Center for Children's Health and Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University, is a Grade 3A comprehensive pediatric hospital integrating medical care, research, education, and child health services. It traces its origins to the Peking Private Children's Hospital, jointly founded in 1942 by Zhu Futang, Wu Ruiping, and Deng Jinxian, pioneers of modern pediatrics in China.

The hospital records an average annual outpatient volume of approximately 2.9 million visits, with around 80,000 inpatient admissions and more than 35,000 surgical procedures each year.

Campuses and Infrastructure

Beijing Children's Hospital operates three campuses: Xicheng, Shunyi, and Yizhuang.

●The Xicheng Campus has 970 authorized beds.

●The Yizhuang Campus is planned to have 1,200 beds (including 1,000 pediatric beds and 200 obstetrics and gynecology beds). Construction commenced in 2025, and the campus is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2028.

Clinical Strength and National Responsibilities

The hospital possesses strong clinical and technical capabilities. It is home to the national key discipline of Pediatrics and hosts 11 national-level platforms, including the National Children's Tumor Surveillance Center and the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases. It also comprises 10 National Clinical Key Specialties, 7 Beijing Municipal Key Laboratories, 4 municipal research platforms, and 16 municipal medical centers.

The hospital operates a Center for Complex and Rare Case Consultation and a Telemedicine Consultation Center. Its capacity for diagnosing and treating complex, critical pediatric diseases is among the leading levels nationwide. It also undertakes major medical tasks assigned by higher authorities, including the prevention and control of significant pediatric infectious diseases and emergency response to public health incidents, earning broad public recognition and trust.

Human Resources and Academic Leadership

Beijing Children's Hospital has 3,443 staff members, including 1,078 physicians, 1,390 nurses, and 474 medical technical professionals. The workforce includes 344 staff with senior professional titles, 410 with associate senior professional titles, and 850 with intermediate professional titles.

The hospital is distinguished by the presence of three academicians—the only three in the Chinese pediatric field—including:

●Zhu Futang, a founder of modern pediatrics in China;

●Hu Yamei, a pioneer of pediatric hematology and oncology in China; and

●Zhang Jinzhe, one of the founders of pediatric surgery in China.

The hospital also hosts numerous high-level experts, including an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Experts with Outstanding Contributions, recipients of the State Council Special Government Allowance, national candidates of the New Century Talents Project, and awardees of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

Education and Talent Development

The hospital houses the National Key Discipline of Pediatrics under the Ministry of Education and a National Outstanding Teaching Team. It serves as the base of the School of Pediatrics and College of Pediatrics of Capital Medical University, with 185 professors and associate professors.

The hospital undertakes multi-level education and training responsibilities, including doctoral and master’s programs, long-cycle pediatric professional training, associate-degree nursing education, and continuing medical education. It is a national standardized residency training base and operates a postdoctoral research station, contributing substantial numbers of outstanding pediatric professionals to society each year.

National Leadership and International Collaboration

As a national leader in pediatrics, Beijing Children's Hospital actively drives the development of the pediatric healthcare system. In 2013, it took the lead in establishing the Beijing Children’s Hospital Group (later renamed the Futang Children's Medical Development and Research Center), pioneering the innovative model of “patients remain local while doctors provide mobile services” to serve children nationwide.

The network has grown to 76 governing member institutions, covering 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, and reaching more than 3,000 primary-level medical institutions. The hospital has established strong relationships and extensive collaboration with pediatric medical institutions and research organizations in the United States, Russia, Canada, Italy, Australia, Sweden, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, and other countries, and is recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology as an International Joint Research Center for Children's Health Development.

Public Welfare and Social Responsibility

Adhering to a patient-centered approach and dedicated to serving children wholeheartedly, the hospital vigorously promotes its institutional motto of “Equity, Compassion, Diligence, Harmony,” and has produced outstanding representatives such as Jia Liqun (National Outstanding Communist Party Member) and Qian Suyun (National March 8 Red Banner Pacesetter).

Committed to public welfare, the hospital has taken the lead in implementing the China Children's Health Poverty Alleviation Program, established the “Beijing Children's Health Foundation,” and organized core professionals to participate in medical assistance missions to Xinjiang, Xizang, and Qinghai. It has also conducted summer camps and a wide range of public education and charitable initiatives for children with diabetes, leukemia, scoliosis, and other conditions, demonstrating the humanitarian spirit of medicine.
