British Embassy Healthcare & Life Sciences Team Visits Beijing Children's Hospital

Beijing Children's Hospital welcomed the Healthcare & Life Sciences Team from the British Embassy Beijing on 29 July. The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views, identify common interests and explore potential areas for future engagement in pediatric health care and innovation. Representatives from the Beijing Municipal Health Commission and relevant clinical, research and administrative departments from Beijing Children's Hospital also participated.

Professor Ni Xin, President of Beijing Children's Hospital and Director of the National Center for Children's Health, welcomed the delegation and introduced the hospital's recent progress in academic development, scientific innovation, digital transformation and international collaboration. He emphasized BCH's role as a national pediatric platform and shared examples of BCH's work in major childhood disease management, the National Childhood Cancer Surveillance Center, artificial intelligence-enabled pediatric care and international medical services. He also identified potential areas for further engagement, including pediatric oncology, digital health, clinical research and workforce development.

Rahul Agarwal, Healthcare and Life Sciences Counsellor at the British Embassy Beijing, introduced developments in the UK's healthcare and life sciences sectors, highlighting strengths in complex disease research, innovative therapeutics, comprehensive cancer care and clinical research. He shared perspectives on strengthening connections among healthcare institutions, research organizations and industry, drawing on the UK's experience in translating scientific advances into clinical practice.

Richard Baker, President of Scottish Development International China, introduced Scotland's life sciences and health innovation ecosystem, highlighting strengths in digital health, medical technologies and precision medicine, as well as Scotland's experience in connecting healthcare, academia, research organizations and industry. He noted SDI's role in supporting connections between Scottish and Chinese organizations in healthcare innovation, research and industry engagement.

Discussions focused on areas of shared interest, including digital health, clinical research, workforce development and industry collaboration. Representatives from BCH and the UK side exchanged perspectives on opportunities to connect clinical expertise, research capabilities and emerging technologies, including applications of artificial intelligence in pediatric care. 

During the visit, the delegation learned more about BCH's work through a demonstration of the AI Pediatrician program and visits to the robot-assisted surgery facilities, International Medical Services Department and the National Childhood Cancer Surveillance Center, gaining insights into the hospital's work in digital health innovation, advanced medical technologies, international medical services and pediatric disease management.

The visit highlighted the value of connecting complementary strengths across healthcare, research and innovation ecosystems to advance child health. Through the exchange, both sides gained a clearer understanding of each other's capabilities and identified potential areas for practical collaboration.
